BAITHAK
A Series of Performances & Events in an Intimate Atmosphere

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is pleased to announce a series of performances and events set in an intimate atmosphere at ‘Romanti Auditoriun’ at the Bhavan’s premises on a regular basis. We would like to name this series as "BAITHAK" whose interpretation would be "home concert or gathering". We wish to present artists and scholars from various fields ranging from music, dance, visual art to literature and Yoga. Our efforts will also be directed towards encouraging upcoming talents and young artists.

The first  Baithak was a vocal concert by Sipra Bose accompanied on Tabla by Gobinda Bose and  Roshan Ali was on Sarangi. Somnath Bose, disciple and son of Gobinda Bose rendered a brief Tabla Solo.

Sipra Bose, a fine singer of rare quality, is one of the most highly acclaimed names in Indian Classical and Light-Classical Music. A disciple of Late Chinmoy Lahiri, she has always upheld the traditional intricacies in singing "Khyal" of Lucknow Gharana. She specialized herself in singing "Thumries" and "Ghazals" under the tutelage of the inimitable peerless of Lucknow, Begum Akhtar. She has performed worldwide and has numerous recordings. Accompanied on Tabla by Gobinda Bosea and his son Somnath Bose,  Roshan Ali  on Sarangi .

     Tarun Bhattacharya is one of the most acclaimed santoor players, the India’s hammered dulcimer. Tarun’s music can evoke deep emotions or immerse the audience into communion with the mystic heart of Nature. Trained initially under his father, Shri Robi Bhattacharya, Tarun is currently under the tutalage of legendary maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar.Tarun Bhattacharya has performed extensively all over the world and has recorded for well-know music companies. He has more than 35 releases.

Accompanied on Tabla by Bikram Ghosh. Disciple and son of versatile Shankar Ghosh, Bikram has accompanied almost all world renowned musicians including Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Sarod by Ken Zuckerman accompanied on tabla by Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri

Ken Zuckerman is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest sarod virtuosos performing today. He has completed twenty-five years of training under the rigorous discipline of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and has accompanied Maestro Khan in numerous concerts in Europe, India, and the United States. In addition to an extensive performance schedule, Ken Zuckerman directs the Ali Akbar College of Music in Switzerland and is also a teacher at the Music Conservatory of Basel, where he conducts courses in both North Indian classical music and the music of the Middle Ages.

Swapan Chaudhuri is a phenomenon in the arena of Indian classical music. He bases his style on the intensive training he received from his Guru, Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas of Calcutta, the eminent exponent of the Lucknow Gharana.  It is undoubtedly through his clarity and elegance of performance both as an accompanist and as a soloist that he has achieved such fame throughout the world as a true master of tabla. As a soloist and accompanist Swapan has traveled extensively  accompanying great maestros such as Pandit Ravi Shankar , Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, the late Nikhil Banerjee, Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Dr. Balamurli Krishna, and other eminent artists. Swapan Chaudhuri is the director of percussion at the Ali Akbar School of Music in San Rafael, California and in Basle, Switzerland . He is also a member of the teaching staff at the California Institute of the Arts , Valencia, California.
