The 8th World Hindi Conference was organized in New York City from July 13 to 15, 2007. New York City is considered a mini world since people of so many different countries live here, maintaining their languages and cultures and assimilating the qualities of American culture. People of almost all regions of India live here. As in India Hindi serves as the unifying Indian language here as well.

It is an established fact that Hindi is the third largest spoken language of the world. In spite of this, Hindi has not been included by the United Nations in its list of approved languages. This issue has been raised from time to time but now the time has come to take concrete steps in the direction of recognizing Hindi in a manner commensurate with the large number of people who speak it. Therefore it is appropriate that the World Hindi Conference is being organized in New York City where the United Nations has its headquarters.

With this in mind, the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India has decided to organize the 8th World Hindi Conference in New York City accepting the proposal of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in this regard and with the support of the Bhavan and other U.S.based Hindi Organizations.
